Most of us know Skype as the video chat program that will allow us to see who we are communicating with via our webcam and computer. Many of us use it to talk to our relatives or friends in far away states or countries. Microsoft is adding functionality to make it life changing.
Saying Skype is about to change the world is a pretty bold statement, but not far off. It will definitely make the way we communicate with others better as it will break down the language barriers.
Later this year Microsoft will be releasing a new version of Skype that will allow you to talk to someone in another language with near real-time speech to speech translation. What this means is you can speak English to someone that only speaks German and both of you will understand each other as Skype will do all the translation. Skypes near real-time translation will show you what the other person is saying to you in your language and vice-versa plus it will speak it in your language for you to hear as well. This will be a great feature given that Skype already handles one-third of all international calls. This volume will definitely increase once businesses start realizing the global benefits of Skype.
This technology was recently launched as part of the Cortana personal assistant in Windows Phone 8.1 and in the speech
recognition that is on Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
Look forward to it later this year on Windows 8.1.
