| How-To Keep Your Computer Free of Viruses |
|
We get asked a lot...How can I keep my machine from getting a virus or spyware? Most people would answer that there isn't a way, but we've done it. This method doesn't require any Anti-Virus program or Anti-Spyware software. For over 6 years we've not had one single file infected on a Windows computer that is hooked to the internet 24/7. The secret is out. The program you need is called Deep Freeze from Faronics. Deep Freeze is possibly the greatest thing since sliced bread. What does Deep Freeze do exactly? In Frozen mode, Deep Freeze will stop any file changes from taking place on your computer. You can make as many changes as you want, but when you restart the computer everything goes back to it's original settings. A frozen computer allows you to change the background wallpaper, screensaver, install software, delete the registry and infect your computer with viruses and spyware...until you restart your computer. Then all your changes magically disappear. Your computer IS capable of catching a virus, but after the restart it will automatically be gone from your computer. Use of anti-virus or anti-spyware software is optional although we suggest it. The reason being is that worms that try to infect other computers on your network could be launched from your computer and infect other non-Deep Freeze computer's. Having anti-virus would stop the worm from being launched from your computer.   The not so good news is that Deep Freeze requires some setup that isn't suited for most individuals. Deep Freeze can use a Thawspace or a unfrozen area of the hard drive to store files. This unfrozen area is capable of becoming infected, but it's highly unlikely. Usually the only files that reside in this thawed space would be documents, music, pics, etc. and no operating system files or program files. The biggest concern with Deep Freeze is that since no changes can be made on a frozen computer that Windows patches and security updates don't stick since they are removed once a frozen computer is restarted. This will require you to periodically unfreeze the computer and install the latest security updates. We suggest that you do the Windows Updates and NOTHING else while unfrozen. Once the updates are finished, freeze the computer back up and continue with your frozen computer. Deep Freeze has other benefits as well. It is great for little kids' computers as well. It keeps everything in place and they can explore all they want without hurting anything with the operating system or applications. Ever wanted to install some software, but were afraid of messing up your computer? Install it while your computer is frozen and when you restart the program will be gone without a trace. This is great for testing software and not worrying about any leftovers from the software. Faronics calls Deep Freeze "Absolute System Integrity". We agree. Check out the Faronics Deep Freeze page HERE. Thank us later for the tip. |
